This week, Midnight Ink sat down with Jeff Cohen (sometimes known as E.J. Copperman), author of the new Aspergers Mystery series.

Midnight Ink: How long have you been writing?

Jeff Cohen: What�s today . . . pretty much since I was eight.

MI: What influence have other authors had on your writing?

JC: I don�t know that other writers influence the way I write. Obviously I have read a lot of writers who are important to me, like Irwin Shaw, Robert B. Parker, William Goldman, and many others. But I�ve always pretty much written the way I write. I think.

MI: If you weren�t a writer, what would you be doing?

JC: Living in a refrigerator carton. I don�t know how to do anything else. Luckily I married well. For any number of reasons.

MI: If you have a job outside of writing, what is it?

JC: I don�t. This is it. So buy my books; I still have student loans to pay off. (Actually I do a little teaching, but that�s much more part-time than writing.)

MI: What is/are your favorite thing/s to do when you�re not writing or working?

JC: It�s such a clich�: I like to spend time with my family. I play guitar when nobody can hear. I watch a lot of movies and I read. I am a remarkably dull person.

MI: Who is your favorite mystery sleuth and why?

JC: Besides my own? Probably Sherlock Holmes, although he�s something of a know-it-all. I like Spenser, at least in the first 30 or 40 books. And Chris Grabenstein�s John Ceepak/Danny Boyle series is something I�ll always stop my day to read.

MI: Do you have a favorite murder case from a book (either yours or another author�s)?

JC: I�m going to get in such trouble for saying this: The murder is the least interesting part of the story to me. I�m much more involved in the characters and their relationships, and hopefully in making the reader laugh. I come up with different ways to kill fictional people because it�s part of the form and it makes the story go, but the murder itself? In other people�s books, I barely pay attention. In my own, it�s always the thing that causes me the most headaches.

MI: What was your inspiration for the Asperger�s Mystery series?

JC: I have a son who has Asperger�s (or whatever they�re calling it this week) and his challenges and triumphs in dealing with the world are an inspiration all the time. As for the Asperger�s series itself, I thought it would be interesting to get inside the head of someone who thought like that and give him something difficult to figure out.  The whole thing came in a flash�the missing head, Questions Answered, Ms. Washburn (although she didn�t have a name yet), everything. It was just a question of figuring out the mechanics of it once I started writing. And that�s always the hardest part. For me.

MI: How does this series compare to your past works?

JC: It�s not as desperate to make you laugh, although hopefully people will find it funny. Aaron Tucker was a joke machine; the plot was secondary to him riffing on things. Elliot Freed was Aaron Tucker on steroids�he lived for comedy, almost literally. The Haunted Guesthouse series has Alison Kerby�s attitude throughout and the situations are set up to be funnier. With Samuel (in the Asperger�s series), he would not be anxious to make jokes because he�d be worried people wouldn�t find them funny. It�s more the reactions of other characters to what he does that carries the humor here.

MI: Tell us about Samuel Hoenig.

JC: Samuel is right on the edge of a lot of things. He has Asperger�s, but he�s very high-functioning, so he almost doesn�t have Asperger�s�at least outwardly. He�s not quite a genius, but he�s really close. He�s an adult in his 30s who lives with his mother because he wants to. And he opens a business at which people can get any question answered�if it interests Samuel. He believes Asperger�s is less a disorder and more a personality trait, so he�ll get a little testy if people treat him like he�s afflicted� but he�s not above using that to his advantage when necessary. Samuel�s complicated, more than might immediately be obvious.

Gizmo

MI: Do you have a pet? Tell us about him/her.

JC: As a matter of fact, we adopted a beagle name Gizmo (and the four of us debated for three days about a new name before leaving the one he�d been given at the shelter) who�s just over a year old and hasn�t figured out he�s not a puppy anymore. He�s a very small beagle (they call him a teacup beagle, but my vet says there�s no such thing). He�s heavily into chewing and getting picked up. He�s settling into the family nicely.

MI: If you don�t have a pet, do you have a favorite animal?

JC: Does Bullwinkle J. Moose count?

MI: What food could you live off of for the rest of your life?

JC: Pasta, but I prefer having a choice.

MI: Do you have a favorite recipe?

JC: You�re assuming I cook. That�s adorable.

MI: What is your favorite part about being an Inker?

JC: I am very big on personal relationships�I like doing business with people I like. So I�ve been really impressed with everybody at Midnight Ink and their incredibly supportive attitude toward Samuel and the series.

Misleading book title

The books title and editorial review is very misleading. I was expecting a book that will teach me how to do my own modifications on my sub, such as intake, exhaust..etc.. Instead, all this book touches on is what you can or should buy. It describes all the diff type of air intake kit, diff type of turbos, diff type of exhaust and diff type of ecu etc... All the info you can easily get off the internet for free.. Haiz, very dissappointed in this book. The book title should be, buyers guide to aftermarket subaru parts, not builders guide!

It was OK

When I read through the book, I wasnt overly impressed. It kinda reads like a product catalogue with lots of parts identified but lacking depth. But, now that Ive had the book for a while, its kinda grown on me. When I go looking for the next area to improve (coilovers, brakes, etc.), I tend to go reaching for this book. Thats worth something...

Not for experienced enthusiasts

This is a very nice book if you dont know much about cars. If, like me, you were hoping for a more in-depth type of content from that offered in Subiesport magazine, dont bother. I learned absolutely nothing that I didnt know before. For me its pretty much useless, but I do want to emphasize that the author has good intentions and that it is a well crafted book. I used to love this kind of book when I was 12.

Very interesting and informative

Few books give you clear and basic info on programming. I have made it through about half the book and was very pleasantly surprised how it brought together all the various technologies used in mobile apps and explained them clearly. Very happy with this purchase.

Helps you get started but examples dont work

Not recommended. Examples must be out of date because they worked in neither platform. I found better examples online but apparently the others didnt test their code before publishing examples or put in examples that werent simple enough to be carried over to later versions.

Not recommended for any development after 2012.

Pinocchio In Outer Space

Jeff Lemire creates a flip side to his Sweet Tooth Universe in this brilliant start to his new series. Tim-21 is a robotic boy created to be a companion for a real boy. But something horrible had happened in this futuristic world. The planet sized "Harvesters " have come wreaking havoc and destruction. But once more a child or in this case a robotic child might be the key to figuring it all out.

Jeff Lemire, the Candian phenom once more proves why he is one of the top writers in comics. Here is yet another completely different , but completely realized Universe to explore. This is top notch space opera with elements of mystery, intrigue and politics combined in.

Artist Dustin Nguyen demonstrates a masterful skill set in this stunning art. Done in pencils and water color paint Nguyen does a great job of bringing this world to life. That Nguyen is able to fully paint an entire issue every month is an amazing fact.

This Trade Paperback collects the first six issues of this limited series which just started in March of 2015. The series is planned for at least 24 issues but that could easily be doubled revealed the creators in an interview I recently read.

The supporting casts includes two humans, Doctor Quon (father of robotics) and Captain Tesla (daughter of an important man). We also have two more robotic cast members, the powerful Driller the Killer and the little robotic dog Bandit.

This first volume has made me very eager for more and Hollywood has agreed as Descender has already been optioned for a movie by Sony.

Colourful sci-fi comic collection about the aftermath of an invasion by giant robots

After giant robots wipe out billions on a faraway planet, a backlash against all robots ensues. This collection deals with the discovery of the origin of the giant robots through Tim21, a boy robot companion and his inventor, Dr Quon, with dire consequences for all concerned as other parties get involved – for the moment.

Well-written and illustrated, it was engaging and interesting. Well worth a look. Volume 2 should be intriguing.

Gorgeous and very well written. Id give it 500 stars if I could, all made out of tin, of course.

While Im generally not a huge comic book person, this series has been a wonderful exception for me.

Beautifully written and drawn -- the hand-drawn water coloring is some of the most gorgeous comic book art Ive ever seen. You could totally leave this on a coffee table and people could just flip the pages and fall in love, without even reading it panel by panel.

Sci Fi works really, really well in graphic form, and yet we have so few really good sci fi graphic novels and comics... Im so glad this series was started.

Ive been downloading the issues on Comixology, but the art is so georgeous in a way that comes out best in print -- so I wanted to get the first volume when it came out. I was worried I wouldnt want to go back and read it, and that this would be a glorified prop in my book case, but Im happy to report that getting to pick this story up in hand and see the water colors in person has made me fall in love with the issues in Volume 1 all over again.

While Ive been downloading the series from Comixology, I have seen enough of the issues in person to know that the first volumes collection is every bit as gorgeous and well done as the individual issues so far..

For a $10 price, the cover is fairly durable, so it should hold up well as long as you dont mistreat it.

About the Author
In a career spanning more than 20 years, Jeff Apter has written 15 commercially and critically well-received books, including, most recently, biographies of ‘Shirley’ Strachan from Skyhooks and Dragon‘s Marc Hunter.

He also co-wrote the recent Kasey Chambers memoir, called A Little Bird Told Me, and worked with Mark Evans of AC/DC on his bestseller, Dirty Deeds. In 2005, Jeff worked with test cricketer turned commentator Michael Slater on his book, Slats.

His other books include studies of Jeff Buckley (which has been adapted for a feature film), the Finn brothers and Keith Urban. Jeff was ghostwriter on a project called In Harm’s Way, the story of a former Australian soldier and his attempts to emancipate two children in Lebanon.

His biography of Johnny O’Keefe is out through Hachette Australia. His latest book is called Up From Down Under: How Australian Music Changed the World.

Jeff lives on the NSW south coast with his wife and two children.

Not what I expected.....

I have to admit that I am fairly disappointed in this book. I was expecting to read more about Dan, Chris and Bens side projects, and their lives outside of Silverchair and how that played a roll in them getting back together and releasing Young Modern, but all Jeff Apter did was rewrite his first book, Tomorrow Never Knows, then throw in a few chapters about Young Modern, and the guys lives after Diorama. I was sadly disappointed! If you have never read Tomorrow Never Knows (which I found to be a much better book, quality is much better, as are the photos in the book)I would recommend this book for the read since it just repeats the first book with the newer content thrown in at the end. If you are looking for a nice collector book,then go with the first book, Tomorrow Never Knows.
