What a treasure!

This reprint of a 1904 survey of Impressionist artists is a treasure and I thank whoever at Amazon made the decision to reprint it! Written by an English art student studying in Paris at the turn of the last century, readers are introduced to the forces -- political and social -- which led to the birth of the Impressionist movement, and then -- one by one -- to the major players in that movement.

The author, Wynford Dewhurst, is himself an artist, and though he is rather modest about it, he personally met and studied under several Impressionist artists. As an artist himself, the author knows first-hand the problems faced by the Impressionists, their rejection by the art community at that time, and their ultimate triumph over the staid and stuffy Classicism that ruled. In sometimes quaint, and always poetic language, he describes how "By avoiding artificially darkened studios they were able to study the problems of light with an actuality impossible under a glass roof. They were, in fact, children of the sun, and through its worship, they evolved an entirely new school ... and [he] is never happier than when attempting to fix upon his canvas some beautiful effect of sunshine, some exquisite gradation of atmosphere."

Dewhurst was most influenced by Monet, and his comments on Monets serial work is particularly beautiful -- "Les Cathedrales" (the Rouen cathedral); "Les Meules" (the haystacks); "Les Peupliers" (the poplars); and of course the "Water Lilies" (indeed, all the Giverny paintings) are described in his typical poetic style. The Haystacks, for example: There are 20 canvases of two haystacks in a neighbors field -- "the fruits of a years labor -- ...the artist watched and painted the haystacks in the making, followed and noted the atmospheric effects upon them at every different hour of the day, at every changing season. He portrays them covered with the pearls of dew, baked by the sun, lost in the fog, rimed with early frosts, and covered in snow. Each picture is a masterpiece of beauty, truth and form."

Unfortunately, the beautiful color photographs given to the author for reproduction are poorly reproduced in black-and-white photos in this reprint. Some of them, of course, are available on-line. However, the author states that even with original photos, "little idea can be gathered of the extreme beauty of the originals. The colour and technique of Impressionist pictures seem unfortunately to be insuperable barriers to their reproduction in monochrome."

This is a most enlightening book on the history of Impressionist Painting! Wynford Dewhurst presents an important argument regarding the "genesis" and inspiration of Impressionist painting. The French will not agree but Dewhurst links the first impressionist paintings to British painter J.M.W. Turner. This is a must read for art history buffs.

Mindblowingly amazing book for first-timers to web development using Java

Ive taken a few intro to web development using Java courses. I have even taken some Spring courses. No one was able to explain basic concepts of JSPs, servlets, controllers, beans, and server engines as well as Mr. Downey.

Despite having taken courses for this material, I was still lost trying to plug my way through all the different parts that make up a web project. This book clarified absolutely everything. I went from spending a whole week trying to debug a problem to what is now an hour or two max of troubleshooting. I went from being completely miserable and pissed at my job to having a blast of a good time.

Ive actually also learned more about how Spring works, because now I fully understand all of the concepts that Spring is trying to replace/simplify/rework.

As far as Im concerned, Tim Downey is a master at imparting knowledge through his writing, diagrams, and examples. All the information is organized and progresses in a logical, common-sense manner. So many other books skip over topics assuming the reader knows all about them, leaving people lost and unable to progress due to missing key pieces of information. With this book, I feel like I am receiving complete knowledge of all the topics.

I cannot recommend this book enough, at least to complete Java noobs trying to learn how to build a web site using Java.

THE Book for beginners

First, excuse my English. Im french speaking

Transmitting knowledge is an art that only exprienced teachers can do.
If you are a beginner, this book is for you. What i like the most of this book is the fact that the author is a experienced teacher who is aware of what newbies (like me)need to process new information.
The exercises after each chapters are very useful and that is the second reason why i bought this book (the first reason being the fact that the author is a teacher).

Very interesting and informative

Few books give you clear and basic info on programming. I have made it through about half the book and was very pleasantly surprised how it brought together all the various technologies used in mobile apps and explained them clearly. Very happy with this purchase.

Helps you get started but examples dont work

Not recommended. Examples must be out of date because they worked in neither platform. I found better examples online but apparently the others didnt test their code before publishing examples or put in examples that werent simple enough to be carried over to later versions.

Not recommended for any development after 2012.
