Great survey of spies in history

This is one of the most enjoyable books Ive read in a long time. I love espionage stories, and Sanders captures them here in all their excitement, cunning, and intrigue. He made the stories of Nathan Hale, the Rosenbergs, and the Cambridge Five seem absolutely fresh -- and I know something about these cases --and introduced me to a lot of stories that were new to me, like that of the Canadian Sarah Edmonds and the Vietnamese super spy Pham Xuan An. Great job all around.Ill look for the next book.

Technical specifications are given for each engine type and the book is fully illustrated with both black & white and color photos. The book goes on to show the progress of Diesel Power, including the output of General Electric and General Motors electromotive division (EMD) from the 1920s to the present. My grandfather was famous for designing and building circus wagons. I love to read anything about the old circus days. This is one of the best circus history books ever written. Dont let the title fool you.

This is worth reading

I came upon Isaacsons writing when I became curious about Einstein. His presentation of Einstein was portrayed as accessible for those of us who are not scientists but that nonetheless are interested in the people who developed it. It was such an engrossing book that the next step was reading something else by this author. No disappointment here, notwithstanding the wide differences in the subjects . In a word about Isaason, wow!
This was not always easy reading because one finds that time for thought is required for juxtaposing ones beliefs and democratic experience with Franklins. It is not to sit in judgement on him but rather to compare and contrast his life and times with mine and to consider what he might make of those differences even as I do the same. That is the mark of a great read and author.
I will end this review with my hearty agreement with the last "fundamental ideal" that Franklin,according to Isaacson, held: "a faith in the wisdom of the common citizen that was manifest in an appreciation for democracy and an opposition to all forms of tyranny." (p. 493). It is my hope and trust that an informed citizenry can make good decisions for their own well being if they follow their common sense. It is no more difficult to do that today than it was then and no less important. That is to say it is very difficult and very important.

This is the third copy of this book I have purchased, having given away my other two, that how much I love it. Isaacson wrote an excellent biography of Franklin, one that Ive reread a few times. I know the expression"like you were there" is overused but this book actually makes you feel you knew the real Franklin. Ive been reading a lot about the younger Franklin recently, his time as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer, his self-education, his escape to Philadelphia, but this book presents the complete Franklin in a way thats reachable. Its not complicated reading, its an exciting story that makes you totally familiar with the man, warts and all.

This book is a "keeper"

Very readable! The only "criticism" I have of this book and author is the constant piling on of fascinating and revealing facts, stories, and explanations on every single page, such that the reader is left with no option but to devour every single word. I generally handle 500+ page books by skimming and skipping, but this one tied me down for weeks. And unlike most books, I didnt look forward to finishing it. This book is a "keeper".

From my many penciled-in notes, here are some of the things I learned about Benjamin Franklin and his world: Where do surnames come from? (p 5); Cotton Mather tells him, "Stoop, young man" (dont brag so much, and people will like you much better) (p 41); warns against being dogmatic in group meetings (like his Junto meetings) (p 57); the importance of doing good deeds, as well as having good thoughts (p 88); many wise maxims, such as: "Hes a fool that cannot conceal his wisdom" (p 99); Scientist and Inventor: all his inventions were freely donated for public use (p 129+); General Braddocks arrogance leading to his defeat and death (p 166); life in London with his new substitute "family" (p 175+); becomes filled with depression, when genocide against innocent Indians becomes legalized in 1763, against all his efforts (p 212-4); balloon mania in France (p 420); required opium for relief from extremely painful kidney stones (p 462). To summarize his life, more than anyone else Franklin created the idea of a "United States" decades before it became a fact, through his zeal and support in uniting the colonies: he did this by helping to create the beginnings of a colony-wide political, social, and military infrastructure.

PHTLS book review

I have been a paramedic since the mid 80s, this book was required for recert of PHTLS card. Unfortunately, by the time recert comes around again it will be time for the next edition. Good, informative book and should be in library of your department, but not necessarily in a personal one. It also comes with computer disc that helps if this is your first time, or trauma isnt your strong point. PHTLS is similar to the other alphabet soup courses like BTLS, AMLS, ATLS etc... Deals with trauma. I do recommend however, that all EMS providers join the NAEMT as it is our voice that makes changes happen.

Great Book.

Took the course this last weekend at UCLA-Daniel Freeman. The course was good, got lots of hands on scenarios, but the stuff in the book was gold. The chapter on kinematics of trauma was better than my whole EMT school on understanding trauma. Coolest thing about it in my personal opinion? It defines Trauma.

Andrew Kelly, trained at Sothebys New York, is a Helena Rubinstein Fellow of the Whitney Museum of American Art and has authored and edited numerous monographs and catalogs on the fine and decorative arts. A beautiful book filled with original scholarship and persuasive insights. If you are interested in the decorative arts, the Works Project Administration of the 1930s, or even in the broader story of the development of Modernism in the United States, this book is a must-read/must have.

Highly recommended!

This book is three amazing things in one: an important, in-depth, scholarly contribution to the literature of the cultural arts programs of the New Deal; a remarkable contextual examination of the American decorative arts in the Southeast and beyond; and a study of applied theories of American regionalism in both the first half of the 20th century and the present day. Kentucky by Design is also an outstanding presentation, a gorgeous coffee table book with hundreds of fabulous color plates, fascinating original essays by Jean M. Burks, Jerrold Hirsch and Erika Doss, fifty extensive catalogue entries by an impressive roster of scholars and experts, including Lee Kogan, Ron Pen and Janet Rae, and rare illuminating oral histories from some of the New Deals preeminent thinkers, including Edith Gregor Halpert, Holger Cahill, and Constance Rourke. This book delves deeply into Franklin Roosevelts New Deal cultural agenda and programs in a contemporary critical light, and it is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the New Deal, Shaker social history and design, or whats unique and why in American decorative arts.

A top-notch overview of American design from the Bluegrass State

This is a beautiful book that anyone who loves the decorative arts will be thrilled to fine. I was especially interested in the furniture featured in the book and the overall beauty of the American design. The quality of the photos and publication is outstanding.
