What one would expect of a reference book.

This Tome of a book is exactly what I needed to learn german. Though its size necessitates one needing to lay it on a surface, its thin pages and letter markers make sorting through it a breeze. The cover appears to be fairly durable which can be said of my mini version as well, but like the mini version, there seems to be some gluing problems in the binding process that causes it to appear on the top or bottom ridges of pages. The tome looks fairly decent and rather classic looking without the dustcover which is good because although the dust cover is very decorative and modern looking, it crumples fairly easily. However, if you are like me, the constant use of the dictionary will protect it from dust enough.

Where this book excels is in its ability, through examples, to give one the proper word it use in various different contexts instead of a literal english-german translation of words. One could also learn through these examples a little in the way of grammer and idioms. The culture section was rather disappointing compared to the mini-version, however, their choice to focus more on business and personal letter or email structure is fairly important and suitable for a book that one would use as a reference book as one could not only find the right words to use in certain situations when sitting down to write a more thoughtful letter, but also see how to make one properly

Overall this book earns a 5/5 in my book.

Publishing Information NOT Accurate, CD-ROM Missing

I purchased this dictionary based on the information provided at the Amazon website, namely that it is a 3rd edition, published in Sept. 2008. As such, this meant to me that the dictionary already includes the new German language rules that was set by the 2006 committee on new German spelling rules, known as "Neue deutsche Rechtschreibung, Stand 1.8.2006"; the Aug. 2006 version of the standard. Unfortunately, this 3rd edition of the "Oxford German Dictionary" - supposedly published in Sept. 2008 - is just a RE-ISSUE of its 2005 3rd edition, with nothing added in the 2008 reprint. Consequently, the new German language rules of Aug. 2006 are not included, yet their June 2004 version are already included. I dont understand why would a prestigious publisher - such as Oxford University Press - mention that their dictionary is a 2008 edition when in fact it is just a reprint of the 2005 edition with no editing at all.

Moreover, several readers comments on amazon,Com and amazon,Co.UK mention that there was an accompanying CD with the dictionary. However, I received NO such a thing. Hopefully, amazon,Com would correct that.

Excellent German Dictionary.

This is an excellent, larger-sized German Dictionary, I have the smaller version, as well. This has many, many word definitions and a very helpful selection of various German grammar rules, especially useful for written German. This does have the "new" spellings and many "new" words. I recommend this as a good, standard reference Dictionary to keep at home. If you wish to have a good Dictionary to carry around with you, try the smaller version of the Oxford German Dictionary. There are fewer words, but more than enough for what you might need in a classroom situation.The large dictionary might be a bit intense for beginners, but sooner or later, every German student will wish to own this. Recommended.

Andrew Kelly, trained at Sothebys New York, is a Helena Rubinstein Fellow of the Whitney Museum of American Art and has authored and edited numerous monographs and catalogs on the fine and decorative arts. He has worked in association with many institutions, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, McNay Art Museum, Harry Ransom Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Lisbon Ajuda National Palace Museum, Pilar and Joan Mir? Foundation Palma de Mallorca, Russian State Museum at the Marble Palace, Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, and Tate Gallery London.

A beautiful book filled with original scholarship and persuasive insights. If you are interested in the decorative arts, the Works Project Administration of the 1930s, or even in the broader story of the development of Modernism in the United States, this book is a must-read/must have.

This book is three amazing things in one: an important, in-depth, scholarly contribution to the literature of the cultural arts programs of the New Deal; a remarkable contextual examination of the American decorative arts in the Southeast and beyond; and a study of applied theories of American regionalism in both the first half of the 20th century and the present day. Kentucky by Design is also an outstanding presentation, a gorgeous coffee table book with hundreds of fabulous color plates, fascinating original essays by Jean M. Burks, Jerrold Hirsch and Erika Doss, fifty extensive catalogue entries by an impressive roster of scholars and experts, including Lee Kogan, Ron Pen and Janet Rae, and rare illuminating oral histories from some of the New Deals preeminent thinkers, including Edith Gregor Halpert, Holger Cahill, and Constance Rourke. This book delves deeply into Franklin Roosevelts New Deal cultural agenda and programs in a contemporary critical light, and it is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the New Deal, Shaker social history and design, or whats unique and why in American decorative arts.
