Midnight Ink: How long have you been writing?

Robert K. Lewis: About seventeen years, give or take.

MI: What influence have other authors had on your writing?

RKL: I love a strong voice, so I�ve spent a lot of time with the noir heavy hitters such as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ed McBain. A more contemporary example of a strong voice that influenced me would be Kem Nunn. However, beyond the writing, these authors also influenced me by showing me just how hard writing can be, and how much work it takes to get better with every book.

MI: If you weren�t a writer, what would you be doing?

RKL: Playing blues guitar in a power trio or quartet. I love playing the blues, and playing it very loud is a pre-requisite.

MI: If you have a job outside of writing, what is it?

RKL: I�m the office manager of the art department at UC Berkeley.  Best possible job and environment for me to have, given that my other job is writing books.

MI: What is/are your favorite thing/s to do when you�re not writing or working?

RKL: Playing blues and hard rock guitar, learning piano, and drinking.

MI: Who is your favorite mystery sleuth and why?

RKL: Frank Kane�s Johnny Liddell. He�s tough, never gives up no matter how much he�s been beaten and battered, and will always solve the case no matter what the price. He�s the sort of detective that will come after you again and again, even if it means dragging himself along the road on his bloodied elbows.

MI: Do you have a favorite murder case from a book (either yours or another author�s)?

RKL: The Abbey Grange, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is not only my favorite murder mystery, it�s also one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes stories. The Abbey Grange is actually one of the inspirations for Mark Mallen, because this is where Holmes really becomes judge and jury, and by doing so, gives us a glance into his great heart. This story is Holmes in one of his finest moments.

MI: What was your inspiration for this series?

RKL: Ah, that�s a large question. Mallen is made up of so many things that I�ve watched, read, and witnessed. There are, of course, the classic detectives: Sam Spade, Marlowe, Johnny Liddell, and Mike Hammer. Then there are the New York cop films of the 1970s: The French Connection, Serpico, The Seven Ups, The Warriors, Taxi Driver, and Death Wish. Also on that list would be other gritty films such as Panic in Needle Park and Midnight Cowboy.

MI: How does this book/series compare to your past works?

RKL: The Mark Mallen series bears no resemblance at all to my earlier works. When I began writing long-form fiction (I�d written screenplays before turning to fiction), I wanted to be a literary writer. That died on the vine. After that I wrote an urban fantasy that went nowhere when I queried agents. I would have to say though that if there were anycomparison to my earlier work, it would be in how I write my protagonists. I want to write heroes that will not be stopped. They keep going on, no matter what.

MI: Do you have a pet? Tell us about him/her.

RKL: Not anymore. However, I�m haunted by the ghosts of three very cranky cats.

 

MI: If you don�t have a pet, do you have a favorite animal?

RKL: Cats. I love cats. They�re possessed of so many personality layers. They can be fastidious, but have no problem shooting litter all over the floor. They love you unconditionally, until they don�t. They have a fascination with throwing things off of counters and tables. Endless amusement. The only thing I have to complain about is that I wish they travelled better. Can you image a cat loving a car ride, hanging its head out the window, filled with the joy of being in a car? Man, that would be greatness.

MI:What food could you live off of for the rest of your life?

RKL: Is Scotch a food? If not, then Patty Melts.

MI: Do you have a favorite recipe?

RKL: For destruction, or success? Oh, you mean food? Then that would be my mother�s recipe for baked chicken. She was a scratch cook, and her cooking usually included every spice in the house, using her intuition as her cookbook.

MI: What�s your favorite part about being an Inker?

RKL: The level of input I�ve been able to give, and having that input acknowledged. There are not many publishers out there that would allow the writer to have a large say regarding covers, but my editor and the artists over at Midnight Ink did. Add to that the level of communication I received from my editor and copy editor and I would say unequivocally that this has been a fantastic experience.

MI:Were the Mark Mallen Novels based off of/inspired by your own life in any way?

RKL: I�ve lived, from time to time, in some very hard environments. When I was sixteen years old, I rented a studio apartment located next to a very old and very large Victorian building, every flat filled with someone eking out a living any way they could, by any means possible. I also lived in the Tenderloin of San Francisco for many years, and if anything, Mallen�s books were influenced by what I witnessed in both of those places, along with the people I saw there and interacted with.

MI: Why did you create Mark Mallen as a former junkie?

RKL: Mallen is a former junkie because I wanted to show that it is possible to overcome our demons. Our world is filled with addictions. Drugs. Alcohol. The Internet. Porn. Our iPhone. You name it, and we seem to have an addiction for it. It takes a strong will, focus, and determination to overcome those addictions, along with the belief that those addictions can in fact be overcome. I wrote Mallen the way he is because I live in hope that we can regain the inner strength and moral compass that I feel our society has lost.

Required reading for all..sports fan or not

Bought this book based on the positive reviews (and as 1st book for my kindle). Starting off, I could not even begin to understand how anyone could take their own life. This book completely changed my outlook on depression and the stigma attached to it within sport and life in general. Essential reading for both sports fans and those who want to try and understand how depression affects people

Great read, insightful, informative and emotionl

This book is great. There has obviously been hours upon hours of research done for this book. It gives the reader an incredibly interesting but also sad look upon a man who should be remembered for his extraordinary life, rather than his tragic death. It is not a morbid and depressing book, instead it is a celebration of Robert Enkes life. This really is a great book, you dont have to like soccer or even sport for that matter to enjoy this book. RIP Robert Enke.

The book is not just another football story, but about his life as son, husband, father, goalkeeper .... How seemingly from the outside life was perfect for him ... but he couldnt cope with the darkness.

It brought a certain perspective to my life.
Somethings in life like family, friends are always more important ... no matter what doubts you are facing in your professional career!

The Wolgemuths (hes an author and owner of a literary agency; shes an author) and the DeVries (hes a pastor and author; she assists him in premarital counseling and marriage retreats) offer here a two-in-one, flip-over-format volume aimed at newlywed Christian couples. Recognizing the success of their own marriages, the authors decided to share their experiences and advice with couples in that make-or-break first year of marriage. Both "books" have the same layout and cover topics such as money, sex and in-laws, but they cater, thematically and tonally, to the gender of their audience. The mans chapter on sex, for instance, playfully employs a baseball metaphor throughout: the male authors fondly recall boyhood discussions of "getting to first base," and offer suggestions for how husbands can please and love their wives without immediately going for the "home run." The womans sex chapter, on the other hand, skips the metaphors, and instead gently explains that communication is key in the first year, and that the wife needs to teach her husband how to satisfy her. The authors consider "normals"-things one spouse grew up thinking was natural but might seem strange to the other (such as the belief that no house is complete without "a really big dog," the conviction that husbands should make more money than their wives, or the assumption that being late is fine). Addressing these "normals" help spouses understand why their partners behave the way they do, which in turn can ease conflicts. Boldly, the authors address the sometimes controversial Biblical principle of submission: "No relationship, in fact, can succeed without submission," they claim. It needs to happen voluntarily (neither spouse can force their partner to submit), and when both people actively and humbly work to yield to each other, "the marriage always wins." And the secret ingredient to successful marriages? Friendship: "it is only in the fields of friendship that the long-term passion and intimacy you long for can grow and flourish." About the Author

In August of 1996, Robert released his first book, She Calls Me Daddy: Seven Things Every Man Needs to Know about Building a Complete Daughter. The book became a bestseller. He is also the author of many other titles including The Most Important Place on Earth: What a Christian Home Looks Like and How to Build One; Seven Things You Better Have Nailed Down before All Hell Breaks Loose and the sequel to his first book, She Still Calls Me Daddy: Building a New Relationship with Your Daughter after You Walk Her Down the Aisle. He has also co-written The Most Important Year in a Man’s Life: What Every Groom Needs to Know with Mark DeVries, and What’s in the Bible with Dr. RC Sproul.

His speaking assignments have taken him across America and through several foreign countries.

Robert Wolgemuth has served two terms as the Chairman of the Evangelical Christian Publishers’ Association. As a layman, he has taught adult Sunday school classes since 1969 in Texas, Tennessee and Florida

A 1969 graduate of Taylor University, he received an honorary doctorate in 2005. Robert, a widower, is the father of two adult daughters and five grandchildren. In the fall of 2015, Robert married Nancy Leigh DeMoss. .

Mark DeVries is pastor of youth and families at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has served for the past seventeen years. In addition to authoring several books, including Family-Based Youth Ministry and True Love Waits, he is founder of Youth Ministry Architects (www.ymarchitects.com), a strategic-planning service for churches facing transitions in their youth ministries. He and his wife, Susan, live in Nashville.

Bobbie Wolgemuth was a Bible teacher and the author or co-author of several books, including Mom’s Bible: God’s Wisdom for Mothers and the four-book Gold Medallion bestselling series Hymns for a Kid’s Heart with Joni Eareckson Tada. She is also the coauthor of Couples of the Bible with her husband, Robert.

Life After the Wedding!

Both my husband and I of 4 months are reading "The Most Important Year in a Womans/Mans Life", and we are thoroughly impressed with it so far!
My husband really liked how his "side"of the book started out with topics of sports, and money...he says that immediately grabbed his attention.
Now my "side", Susan Devries and Bobble Wolgemuth writing style really appealed to the emotional aspect of marriage...the expectations prior to marraige, and the reality of life after marraige. I appreciate their ability to effectively communicate womens emotion in writing, which is not easy to do! I believe the lady authors do a superb job at capturing the emotions and lending that support for the female during the 1st year of marraige.
The book also speaks on topics such as sex from both the male and female perspective...So the female authors explain what sex is like for the men-and the importance of making love with your husband, and the male authors explain sex to the men using a baseball analogy (first base, second base, third base, and home) to ensure they comprehend how to make love to your wife.
There is also the middle section, "Meet in the middle" with activities/review material for the husband and wife to complete together once they have each read their portion.
This is a very creative book! 2-in-1! I have never seen that!
I will definately recommend this book to other newlyweds in my church!

A Useful Resource for Newly Marrieds

Susan and Mark DeVries and Bobbie and Robert Wolgemuth have put together not only a helpful first year companion for newly marrieds, theyve done it with creativity.

This one book is really two books in one. From one side, women can read about what to expect, how to handle, and generally what constitutes a good first year in a Christian marriage. From the opposite side of the book, men develop the same type of material. Then, in the middle, are questions and ideas to bring the two sides together. They tackle topics from a balanced, Christian perspective and give tremendous insight into both sides of the marriage relationship.

The only issue I had with the book was that from the womans perspective (yeah, I peaked in on that side :) there is great emphasis placed on the womans ability to change the man. Though typical of our culture today, I think this is the only (though not necessarily insignificant) unbalanced part of the book. I would have liked to have heard on both sides of the book how both the husband and wife provide complimentary change into each others lives. This then focuses on mutual change, dreams, and submission.

Even with that problem, I think I could recommend this book to newly married couples as a good guideline on how to build a strong foundation for a life-long commitment to an imperfect person.

Great for any stage of maariage

I have been married for a year and a half and just read the book. You can read it before you get married or thirty years down the road. It tells you simple rules and ideas you can actually practice. I know its a Christian book and that is one reason why I was given it, but you can read it being any faith, just as long as you want a better marriage and relationship. And its so fun being in one book to "meet in the middle." I am about to read his side of the book now!
