Fifteen Fun Facts Mark Stevens

Fifteen Fun Facts Mark Stevens

This week, Midnight Ink presents Fifteen Fun Facts about Mark Stevens, author of the Allison Coil mysteries. His latest, Lake of Fire, was released earlier this month.

1.  I think any meal that involves jalapenos is a good one.
2. I write my first drafts by hand. In old-school notebooks. With a pen.
3. Im the son of two librarians. (There are very few of us, based on my sampling of the generation population. We are a lucky bunch. Anyone who grows up learning to love to read is lucky.)
4. I covered the devastating 1985 earthquake in Mexico City. I got there in time to ride out a magnitude 7.5 aftershock. I will never forget the sensation.
5. I used to play bass in a band that opened for Styx at the corn festival in western Colorado.
6. I know one really good card trick. Ive known it since I was about eight years old. I dont know any others. Its really easy to learn and it works.
7. I am a big fan of Patricia Highsmith and have read both biographies plus all of Highsmiths fiction. Im glad shes getting her due. Read Suspension of Mercy if you get a chance.
8. Im a big fan of John Updike and read the terrific biography last year by Adam Begley. True, Patricia Highsmith and John Updike dont have much in common. Except that they both make you want to keep reading.  Read the Rabbit books if you get a chance.
9. I was married in a double wedding.
10. Ive visited every state. Its a fluke. It wasnt a thing.
11. I still root for The Colorado Rockies. It doesnt get much sadder or pathetic than that. I mean, I watch games in September when it hasnt mattered for a long, long time.
12. I like Project Runway and Top Chef. Im a sucker. Face Off is really good, too.
13. Give me any reality TV show about survival and Im there. A friend just turned me on to Alone. The old show Survivorman inspired one of my characters, Devo. Devo plays a big role in my new book, Lake of Fire.
14. Cracker is my all-time favorite band. I will travel a long, long way to see that band. But in late August, they played in Nederland, Colorado. (Heres a pic I took at that show.) I think David Lowery, the guy on the right, knows the secret to the universe. Hes just not telling us.

Cracker
15. I once was the babysitter for two brothers in the town where I grew up (Lincoln, Mass.) One of the brothers was a 7-year-old. His name was John Flansburgh. John went on to form a terrific band, They Might be Giants. I was a fan of the bands first album long before I figured out, hey, I know that guy. John and his pal John Linnell opened up rock and roll in a whole new lyrical and tuneful way, to my way of thinking. Check out Birdhouse in My Soul or, an early one, Dont Lets Start. They are still making great, great music and they post free songs here every week.

Q A with Mark Stevens!

Q A with Mark Stevens!

This week, we sat down with Mark Stevens, who just made his Midnight Ink debut with Trapline!

Midnight Ink: How long have you been writing?

Mark Stevens: Since 1984. Yikes! Thirty years. I wasnt published until 2007 (seven short years ago). Stubborn? A bit.  I learned so much before finally breaking through and even more since then.

MI: What influence have other authors had on your writing?

MS: Wow. How long do you have? An hour? All day? From Joseph Conrad to John Updike, from Patricia Highsmith to Nevada Barr and Tony Hillerman, writers I love show me there are many ways of capturing humanity on a page. Im the son of two librarians (its true) so books and reading have been a way of life since I was old enough to hold a book.

MI: If you werent a writer, what would you be doing?

MS: Bass player in the band Cracker, one of the best rock bands on the planet.  Speaking of writersthe songwriters in that band, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, are strong writers. Great imagery and ideas in the lyrics. That bass-playing job is not currently open, alas. But while I have your attention, Cracker has a new double album coming out next month: From Berkeley to Bakersfield. Cant wait. And the band is playing Denver on New Years Eve this year. Please dont me going about this band. I might never stop.  I think David Lowery knows the secret to the universe. (But hes just not telling us.)

MI: If you have a job outside of writing, what is it?

MS: I have my own public relations and communications business and work with a number of very cool clientsa small school district in the Denver area, a non-profit that works with poor families, and Denvers shared-bike system, Denver B-cycle. Among others.

MI: What is/are your favorite thing/s to do when youre not writing or working?

MS: Im a decent cook and enjoy it. Im a decent bass player (and should get better). And I love hanging out in Denver (restaurants, movies, theater) and around Colorado.  Must do more camping and hiking next year, especially in the Flat Tops Wilderness where the Allison Coil Mysteries are set.  I know that sounds self-serving but its one of the most beautiful places on the state. Just dont tell anyone. Please. Whatever you do, keep this between us.

MI: Who is your favorite mystery sleuth and why?

MS: Im a big fan of Walt Longmirein the series of mystery novels by Craig Johnson. (I thought the television version didnt quite nail the Longmire character.) Johnsons Longmire is a restrained intellect and regards humanity with a near-poetic eye. I also liked Jim Chee in Tony Hillermans books and Anna Pigeon in the Nevada Barr series. Anna is highly underrated. She is such a strong character and delivers strong point of view every time. I like good crime-solving in mysteries. But I also dig good crimes and criminals. Got a dark side.

MI: Do you have a favorite murder case from a book (either yours or another authors)?

MS: How about a favorite plot? I love Suspension of Mercy by Patricia Highsmith. A frustrated mystery writer decides one weekend, while his wife is away, to go through the motions of pretending to murder her.  So, of course, he can feel what its like. And what happens? Well, the wife goes missing. And our hero is investigated for her death. I really cant give away the ending. OK, yes I can. Ill be obtuse. Pretend turns real. That doesnt give away too much, does it. A spine-chilling read.

MI: What was your inspiration for the Allison Coil mysteries?

MS: Shes based on someone I met! Today shes a veterinarian in Western Colorado but at the time she was a hunting guide in the Flat Tops Wilderness.  (Again, the most beautiful area in the state, but dont tell anyone.) I remember the moment I met her and thought, boom, heres a perfect character for a mystery novel. I mean, a strong woman in a mans world of hunting. So, youve got guns handy. And harsh conditions, rugged terrain, and usually some alcohol around the hunting camps. So the inspiration for Allison Coil was both the woman and the setting. The day that happened was like finding out you had two winning lottery tickets.

MI: Tell us about Allison Coil!

MS: First, shes a refugee from the city. She survived a commercial airplane crash in New York City. The crash haunts her. Surviving haunts her. Seatmates died. She didnt. She was a typical big-city young professional and, then, as part of recovering from her injuries she recuperated in the Flat Tops Wilderness (have I mentioned this is an amazing part of the state?). She now considers the Flat Tops her healing spot. She isnt leaving. She learned to ride horses, learned to guide hunts and now owns an outfitting business. She will do whatever it takes to protect the Flat Tops.

MI: How does this series compare to your other works?

MS: Its more outdoors. My other three completed mysteries are all city-based.  All set in Denver.

MI: Do you have a pet? Tell us about him/her.

MS: In late October, we said goodbye to our black lab mix Hercules, who was with us for nearly 15 years. He was two when we got him and he watched our two daughters grow up from little girls to young women. Isnt incredible how dogs become part of the family? Just unbelievable. We also have two black cats, Zipper and Sadie. Two very different cats who have found a way to cohabitate. Sort of.

MI: What food could you live off of for the rest of your life?

MS: A perfectly spicy tortilla soup. Or anything Mexican, really. Or Italian. Or Mediterranean, you know, like Greek food is wonderful. Or . . .

MI: Do you have a favorite recipe?

MS: This one from Cooks.com is like one Ive been making for decades.  The best part is slathering on amazing mango chutney or something . . . store-bought or homemade.  Apple chutney is great, too.  So when the recipe mentions about sour cream at the end, imagine a few scoops of chutney, too. This recipe is an excuse to eat great chutney.

CURRIED TURKEY TURNOVERS

1 lb. ground turkey

2 green onions, diced

1 (7 1/2 oz.) can tomatoes, cut updrain the juice off !

1 med. green pepper, chopped (totally optional)

1/2 c. shredded carrot

1/4 c. raisins

1 tsp. curry powder

1/2 tsp. ground cumin

1/4 tsp. pepper

2 (9") unbaked pie crusts

1 beaten egg

Plain yogurt or sour cream

Chives, optional

For Filling: In 10 inch skillet cook turkey and onion until brown; drain fat, stir in undrained tomatoes, pepper, carrot, raisins, curry powder, cumin and pepper. Cover and simmer 10 minutes. Remove cover and cook until liquid evaporates. Spoon into bowl and cool.

For Pastry: Roll out two 9 inch circular pastries and sprinkle with flour. Spread filling on half of pie crust and fold. Seal and flute edges. Cut side in crust to let steam escape. Transfer to cookie sheet for baking. Brush with beaten egg. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with dollops of plain yogurt or sour cream mixed with chives. 4-6 servings.

MI: What is your favorite part about being an Inker?

MS: Having the whole team behind meeditors (Terri and Connie), publicist (Beth), and cover designers. (I sure hope Lisa Novak designs the cover of my next book because how much I love the cover for Trapline).

Trapline, An Allison Coil Mystery, is available online and in bookstores now! And, if youre in the Denver-area, dont miss Marks launch party this Friday (November 21) at 7:00 p.m.!

From Publishers Weekly
The Wolgemuths (hes an author and owner of a literary agency; shes an author) and the DeVries (hes a pastor and author; she assists him in premarital counseling and marriage retreats) offer here a two-in-one, flip-over-format volume aimed at newlywed Christian couples. Recognizing the success of their own marriages, the authors decided to share their experiences and advice with couples in that make-or-break first year of marriage. Both "books" have the same layout and cover topics such as money, sex and in-laws, but they cater, thematically and tonally, to the gender of their audience. The mans chapter on sex, for instance, playfully employs a baseball metaphor throughout: the male authors fondly recall boyhood discussions of "getting to first base," and offer suggestions for how husbands can please and love their wives without immediately going for the "home run." The womans sex chapter, on the other hand, skips the metaphors, and instead gently explains that communication is key in the first year, and that the wife needs to teach her husband how to satisfy her. The authors consider "normals"-things one spouse grew up thinking was natural but might seem strange to the other (such as the belief that no house is complete without "a really big dog," the conviction that husbands should make more money than their wives, or the assumption that being late is fine). Addressing these "normals" help spouses understand why their partners behave the way they do, which in turn can ease conflicts. Boldly, the authors address the sometimes controversial Biblical principle of submission: "No relationship, in fact, can succeed without submission," they claim. It needs to happen voluntarily (neither spouse can force their partner to submit), and when both people actively and humbly work to yield to each other, "the marriage always wins." And the secret ingredient to successful marriages? Friendship: "it is only in the fields of friendship that the long-term passion and intimacy you long for can grow and flourish." Each book is neatly wrapped up with a "Meet in the Middle" section, which offers questions and exercises the husband and wife can work through together to continue to build upon the lessons theyve just learned.

Life After the Wedding!
By A Customer
Both my husband and I of 4 months are reading "The Most Important Year in a Womans/Mans Life", and we are thoroughly impressed with it so far!
My husband really liked how his "side"of the book started out with topics of sports, and money...he says that immediately grabbed his attention.
Now my "side", Susan Devries and Bobble Wolgemuth writing style really appealed to the emotional aspect of marriage...the expectations prior to marraige, and the reality of life after marraige. I appreciate their ability to effectively communicate womens emotion in writing, which is not easy to do! I believe the lady authors do a superb job at capturing the emotions and lending that support for the female during the 1st year of marraige.
The book also speaks on topics such as sex from both the male and female perspective...So the female authors explain what sex is like for the men-and the importance of making love with your husband, and the male authors explain sex to the men using a baseball analogy (first base, second base, third base, and home) to ensure they comprehend how to make love to your wife.
There is also the middle section, "Meet in the middle" with activities/review material for the husband and wife to complete together once they have each read their portion.
This is a very creative book! 2-in-1! I have never seen that!
I will definately recommend this book to other newlyweds in my church!

A Useful Resource for Newly Marrieds
By PhilThreeten
Susan and Mark DeVries and Bobbie and Robert Wolgemuth have put together not only a helpful first year companion for newly marrieds, theyve done it with creativity.

This one book is really two books in one. From one side, women can read about what to expect, how to handle, and generally what constitutes a good first year in a Christian marriage. From the opposite side of the book, men develop the same type of material. Then, in the middle, are questions and ideas to bring the two sides together. They tackle topics from a balanced, Christian perspective and give tremendous insight into both sides of the marriage relationship.

The only issue I had with the book was that from the womans perspective (yeah, I peaked in on that side :) there is great emphasis placed on the womans ability to change the man. Though typical of our culture today, I think this is the only (though not necessarily insignificant) unbalanced part of the book. I would have liked to have heard on both sides of the book how both the husband and wife provide complimentary change into each others lives. This then focuses on mutual change, dreams, and submission.

Even with that problem, I think I could recommend this book to newly married couples as a good guideline on how to build a strong foundation for a life-long commitment to an imperfect person.

Great for any stage of maariage
By Corey Morgan
I have been married for a year and a half and just read the book. You can read it before you get married or thirty years down the road. It tells you simple rules and ideas you can actually practice. I know its a Christian book and that is one reason why I was given it, but you can read it being any faith, just as long as you want a better marriage and relationship. And its so fun being in one book to "meet in the middle." I am about to read his side of the book now!
