Here, award-winning writer Ronald Reng pieces together the puzzle of his lost friends life. On November 10,?2009, the German national goalkeeper, Robert Enke, stepped in front of a passing train. He was 32 years old. Viewed from the outside, Enke had it all. He was a professional goalkeeper who had played for a string of Europes top clubs, including Jose Mourinhos Benfica and Louis Van Gaals Barcelona, and was destined to be his countrys first choice for years to come. But beneath the bright veneer of success lay a darker story.?Reng brings into sharp relief the specific demands and fears faced by those who play top-level sport. Heartfelt, but never sentimental, he tells the universal tragedy of a talented mans struggles against his own demons.

Required reading for all..sports fan or not
By daltond
Bought this book based on the positive reviews (and as 1st book for my kindle). Starting off, I could not even begin to understand how anyone could take their own life. This book completely changed my outlook on depression and the stigma attached to it within sport and life in general. Essential reading for both sports fans and those who want to try and understand how depression affects people

Great read, insightful, informative and emotionl
By Soccer
This book is great. There has obviously been hours upon hours of research done for this book. It gives the reader an incredibly interesting but also sad look upon a man who should be remembered for his extraordinary life, rather than his tragic death. It is not a morbid and depressing book, instead it is a celebration of Robert Enkes life. This really is a great book, you dont have to like soccer or even sport for that matter to enjoy this book. RIP Robert Enke.

Very Touching
By Marwin
The book is not just another football story, but about his life as son, husband, father, goalkeeper .... How seemingly from the outside life was perfect for him ... but he couldnt cope with the darkness.

It brought a certain perspective to my life.
Somethings in life like family, friends are always more important ... no matter what doubts you are facing in your professional career!

She made a promise in desperation
Now its time to keep it

Lena Woodward, elegant and poised, has lived a comfortable life among Chicago Society since she immigrated to the US and began a new life at the end of World War II. But now something has resurfaced that Lena cannot ignore: an unfulfilled promise she made long ago that can no longer stay buried.

Driven to renew the quest that still keeps her awake at night, Lena enlists the help of lawyer Catherine Lockhart and private investigator Liam Taggart. Behind Lena’s stoic facade are memories that will no longer be contained. She begins to recount a tale, harkening back to her harrowing past in Nazi-occupied Poland, of the bond she shared with her childhood friend Karolina. Karolina was vivacious and beautiful, athletic and charismatic, and Lena has cherished the memory of their friendship her whole life. But there is something about the story that is unfinished, questions that must be answered about what is true and what is not, and what Lena is willing to risk to uncover the past. Has the real story been hidden these many years? And if so, why?

Two girls, coming of age in a dangerous time, bearers of secrets that only they could share.

Just when you think there could not be anything new to ferret out from World War II comes Karolinas Twins, a spellbinding new novel by the bestselling author of Once We Were Brothers and Saving Sophie. In this richly woven tale of love, survival and resilience during some of the darkest hours, the unbreakable bond between girlhood friends will have consequences into the future and beyond.

Review

“Readers who crave more books like Balson’s Once We Were Brothers (2013) and Kristin Hannah’s bestselling The Nightingale (2015) will be enthralled by Karolina’s Twins.” ?Booklist (starred review)

"A heart-wrenching but ultimately triumphant story." ?Chicago Tribune

"Karolinas Twins is involving right from the start, it reads quickly, and fans of historical fiction are sure to enjoy it." ?Chicago Jewish Star

“A heartbreaking tale of a mother’s love, friendship, and family in the face of increasingly brutal conditions and the constant threat of imminent death in Nazi-occupied Poland…reminiscent of the author’s first novel Once We Were Brothers…compelling.” ?Library Journal

“The third in Balson’s promising series about a husband-and-wife investigation team specializing in Holocaust cases. [Lena Woodward’s] survivor account becomes the main source of suspense, since she is reluctant to reveal the full horror of what she experienced until the end…and [it] does not disappoint.” ?Kirkus

"Balson kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what the next chapter would reveal. He did an excellent job in staying true to the historical facts of those years of the Holocaust and what Lena, the main character and survivor, had to go through. Balson keeps the suspense so riveting that it was difficult to put the book down. I would say most will read it in one night sitting?kudos to Ronald Balson." ?Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff, Director of the University of Miami Holocaust Teacher Institute

“Secrets, friendships, survival, and the Holocaust are woven together in Ronald H. Balson’s haunting Karolinas Twins.” ?Family Circle

Karolinas Twins is Balsams best yet!
By Louise Glass
Karolinas Twins started slowly and built up momentum to the point I was so engrossed in finding out the truth, that I read the book through the night.
Ronald Balsam has penned another historically accurate novel that tugs at your heart and makes you care about the people he writes about.
This book was based partly on a real life survivor of the holocaust who told her tale to the author.
I will not give a full synopsis of the book or any spoilers.
There is an exceptionally brave 89 year old woman named Lens, who was a friend of Bens from Once We Were Brothers. She hires Catharine to represent her in court, and Liam to investigate an over 70 year old mystery.
The author goes between the holocaust and the present with great ease and blends the two worlds seamlessly.
I enjoy learning more about that time in history through Mr. balsams book, for he is not just a lawyer and a writer, but a marvelous historian.
The courtroom case added a drama that needed to come to light regarding the abuse of the elderly by their children - in this case for money or other reasons.
The team of Catharine and Liam grows stronger with this third book, and I enjoy the love and easygoing relationship the now married couple share.
When you read this book about Lena, the holocaust survivor who seemingly lost everything, and is in a quest to find two babies from that horrific time- you will root for her and hope she can find Karolinas twins.
Did they exist or is she delusional from old age?
Read this thoroughly engrossing book and you will find out.
There is violence and atrocities, and get some tissues ready for the last 100 or so pages.
I highly recommend this book to all readers interested in that time in history or just want to read a novel that is written so well you hate to see it end.

Sweeping historical novel, great read, plot could be stronger
By M. Friedlander
I keep thinking I cant be shaken up yet again by another Holocaust novel. And yet this book grabs me by the gut and turns me inside out emotionally with its vivid, historically accurate descriptions of this most horrid chapter in human history. For that part of the novel alone I must give it five stars. I was swept along by the story of Lena’s life and enjoyed the pacing and the buildup of the plot. That said, I agree with a few other reviewers regarding the credibility as well as predictability of the plot. Those parts were much weaker, and I almost wish the book had been about Lena’s life from her perspective back then, rather than the somewhat contrived story happening in the present time. So I still prefer "Once We Were Brothers," which I loved with no reservations through the last page. But don’t let these comments take away from the overall value of the book. I set a very high bar of expectations for an author I like, and sometimes end up being his or her harshest critic. But the bottom line is that I loved reading this book. In fact, I liked it so much, I read it slowly, to savor some every night. Sometimes its not the destination but the journey that counts. This was an “unputtable-down” book.

A gripping must read of a "never again" subject
By David Templer
I read some of the negative reviews and found them unnecessarily critical. This is an easy read of a difficult subject. It highlights strength and determination in the face of misery and torture. Despite the dark subject the reader is kept hopeful, like the character in the book. Like "Once We Were Brothers" it clearly describes the manipulative and methodical advancement of the Nazis. The reader can feel and imagine what it is like to be stripped of freedom, enslaved and dehumanized. It is a gripping portrayal of the rise and fall of the Nazis. I could not help but think of the current environment in N. Korea and China and the indiscriminate slaughter of MILLIONS of people (not just jews) like they were mere vermin.

The novel gets off to a slow start due to the way it is written but the 2nd half of the book totally sucks the reader in.

I purchased the book and would gladly purchase others for use as gifts.
