Its perhaps not a perfect distillation of its intended subject

Hesmondhalghs socio-cultural study starts out a little bit rough, spending a lot of time telling us things hes going to tell us without actually telling us those things. But as this swift, theoretically intricate but surprisingly readable volume digs into its subject matter, the writer uncovers interesting notions about the complexly sexualized cultural presentation of black music; various regional and ethnic musics of oppressed minorities that ended up essentially becoming "national" musics; what precisely constitutes "folk music," and how political said music is obligated to be; and the ways in which people use music both as a tool of self-definition and as a means of excluding others (the idea of a class-based approach to music is one that I had not truly theoretically dug into, and Hesmondhalghs book is an exemplary introduction to this notion). Its perhaps not a perfect distillation of its intended subject, but with such a broad thesis, how could it be? Nevertheless, recommended reading for anyone interesting in the greater meaning of the songs we often tap our foot to, but otherwise take for granted.

Research Matters: For Research Papers

I found Research Matters to be a very helpful book. I used it to write a research paper for my English class. I enjoyed using it (as much as one can while writing a paper).

Research Matters is a book about research. It goes into detail about all the stages of the research process, providing helpful tips and short cuts in writing your research paper.
It has a very helpful glossary and it is easy to find the different subjects that are wanted. I found it very easy to navigate through the book to find the sections I needed. The formatting of the book was helpful in its lay out of the pages, and easy to understand.

It gives helpful tips in many different ways from writing a Thesis to phrasing research questions and search terms. It is not a book that needs to be read from cover to cover. It should be used instead to find information on the different aspects of writing a research paper that a person would need to know. It also can help with information that a writer already knows, but needs to refine.

I found this book particularly helpful because I had to switch from my usual MLA formatting and instead use APA formatting. This book helped me make the transition with comparative ease.

I also found this book particularly helpful for its information on how to do an annotated bibliography. The formatting for an annotated bibliography was strange to me, but this book showed me how to do it. Showing me in pictures how one was laid out. It also gave me ways to improve my abilities if I had already known how to write an annotated bibliography.
The question could be asked why not just use Google to find out how to cite, research, or write an annotated bibliography? The answer is yes Google has the resources to help in this area and is free. However, I prefer using Research Matters for several reasons. One, I am old fashioned and prefer to look at paper and hold it in my hand. Two, it is easier to find things quickly. Three, you know the information is correct. Finally, four I found the tips the book gave about research very helpful.

This book rates well compared to author books in the same genre. I have used another book similar to this one (I cannot recall the name) and Research matters rates in most parts very favorably to it. I found the information very helpful in comparison. However, there is one critique I wish to make. Research Matters does not give an exhaustive list of different citations a person might need to use in the course of a research paper. Its list is general and only sort of helpful. Yet, this is the only real problem I have with the book.

In other words if you need help with a research paper I would recommend this book as a great source of information. However, if you only need help with citing you need to look elsewhere.

It is a very good book!

I am currently using this book for a research class. The book has a whole bunch of helpful tips to engage the student into creating thoughtful, compact, and crisp research papers. It uses examples, gives real-life applications, and has a multitude of available resources. It is a very good book!

Easy to read layout with tons of beneficial and referenced information based on The Quran and Sunnah and not conjecture. Explains basic beliefs and refutes misconceptions. Love that there are lined margins for the readers to take notes. Quiz questions to test your knowledge at the end of each chapter. Well thought out and presented. Masha Allah!
