This is not a book about sailing. It is about living on a boat, whether or not that boat ever leaves the dock. Living on a boat has never been easier, cheaper, or more accessible. The plethora of propane appliances, high-tech insulation, GPS navigation, long-range Wi-Fi, and inexpensive solar panels and generators makes amassing the personal infrastructure necessary to sustain your life childs play compared to the obstacles of the past. The biggest hurdles are purchasing the right equipment and assembling them in the right order. This book will help you with both.
This book is written for those people intrigued by boats and tiny houses. People who arent afraid to read a book, watch a few YouTube videos, then roll up their sleeves and try their best. There is no right way to turn a boat into a tiny home. Heck, the very concept of level doesnt even exist on a boat. As long as the structural integrity of the boat is sound, your only limit is your creativity and willingness to put the sweat equity into your own affordable, environmentally friendly, waterfront home.
The creative outlet that boat restoration provides makes your home uniquely yours and generates a great pride of ownership. When I ask boat owners Whats new? on their boat, their pride in the fruits of their labor always shines through the conversation. PaperWhite issue FIXED!
By Amazon Customer
PaperWhite issue FIXED! I was excited and relieve to receive an email from Amazon saying that updates had been made which fixed the formatting issues people had been experiencing.
If you are still having these issues, log in to your Amazon account and go to "Your Account" > "Manage your Content and Devices" (under Digital Content) and you can choose to update the book. In addition, you can set it up so that your digital library is automatically updated in the future by clicking on "Automatic Book Update" under the "Settings" tab in this same section. And anyone who purchases the book from this point forward will not have the aforementioned formatting issues.
As for the book itself, its a wonderful resource for those of varying skill level who are looking to make improvements to their boat and just the introduction alone inspired me as I prepare to go down the road of purchasing a boat and making it my tiny floating home. As a complete beginner when it comes to anything boat related, I feel like I not only have a better understanding of the systems on a boat, but that I could actually follow the steps outlined and insulate the hull and improve the electrical system... and thats saying a lot!

Exactly the book I needed…
By David T
This is exactly the book I needed. Im a Pacific Northwest sailor who is planning to buy a boat to liveaboard in the next year or two. Ive done a ton of research online surrounding distinctly PNW issues such as condensation, mildew, and insulation, but the vast majority of what Ive found was either tailored to tropical climates or truly harsh climates where marinas freeze. Ive also researched issues such as internet access and sustainable electrical generation, only to find the answers are often region specific.
Chris does a terrific job of addressing the issues a liveaboard will face in a way thats exceedingly approachable. As someone who has not been especially handy in the past, Chris step by step approach is especially welcome and serves to reassure me that buying an affordable boat and outfitting it as a liveaboard in the Pacific Northwest is within my capabilities. As someone who likes to analyze a problem and come to his own conclusions, I appreciate how Chris explains how he came to his own solution for a given problem, and how his solution differs—when it differs—from conventional solutions found in internet forums. I value the insight into his thought processes, since each boats, and each boat owners, solution will by necessity be a little bit different.
[edit 2/21/16: Chris has fixed the formatting and it now displays perfectly, the following paragraph refers to an earlier version of the ebook.] As another reviewer mentioned, the books formatting is less than ideal on an e-ink Kindle. This is because Chris has included high resolution images throughout the book. And the formatting issues are common with Kindle books that include high resolution images. I found the book was best viewed/read on Amazons web-based reader (read.amazon, com) or via the Kindle software on a tablet (iPad or Kindle Fire). Any time a book on Amazon says "Due to its large file size, this book may take longer to download" under the page count of the book on the product page, this will almost certainly be the case.

Good but Hard to Read
By MartyHeyman
This was an interesting and short read but on my Kindle Paperwhite, I had to set the type size to the maximum and even then, the type was hard to read (tiny).

Dropping my Sketchbook into the Sea
Dropping my Sketchbook into the Sea
[by Lynne Chapman, from Sheffield, UK, on location at Robin Hoods Bay]

When ever we visit Robin Hoods Bay, I always get excited by the shadow shapes created on the cliffs, because of the extreme erosion all along that section of coast. It makes for an interestingly ragged skyline too, where the top and edges sink and crumble. At this time of year, its pretty quiet too, just a few dog-walkers in big coats. As I came to the end of my painting, it started to spit with rain. A big cloud was looming, so I retreated back to civilisation for a warming pot of tea and a sandwich.

After lunch, things brightened up, but I had to battle increasingly strong winds, trying to snatch the sketchbook from my hand, especially as I couldnt resist folding my concertina out so I could work across 3 pages at a time. The disaster struck when I was half way through a painting at the very end of one of my 2 metre long books (I was trying to fill up the final concertina I did in China). While I was waiting for the paint to dry, I thought Id start another sketch, so I carefully wedged the drying book between my rucksack and the boulder I was sitting on, and got out a new sketchbook.
I had just made the first paint mark, when a particularly violent gust of wind bashed me from behind. I just managed to keep hold of the book in my hand, but the wedged sketchbook wasnt so lucky. Plus, the leverage of the wind against the book toppled my rucksack forward from the rock. To my horror, both book and rucksack landed in the deep rock pool.

Panic. The trouble was, my hands were full and anything I put down would be flung down the beach in the still crazy wind. I sacrificed the rucksack to the water and managed to grab one end of the sketchbook as it went in, whisking it out again really fast. I was left trying to juggle the madly-flapping, dripping concertina, a loaded paintbrush and paint-filled pallet, as well as the other sketchbook. The wet sketchbook was trying to rip itself in half. Paint, sea and sand were going everywhere.
I yelled HELP! HELP!!!

It was very lucky for me that John was not far along the beach, poking around, looking for fossils. He leapt to the rescue. He yanked the rucksack out of the water with and then took the wet sketchbook off me. Miraculously, the bulk of the work was unharmed: amazing, given it was all watercolour or watercolour pencil sketches. Some of the paint on the final sketch had still been wet when it was dunked though, so that image got partially washed away, as you can see above.
I was never able to finish it off though, because of what happened next...

While John chivalrously stood holding out the length of unfolded, wet sketchbook, to dry in the wind, I finished off the other painting Id just started. This is it above: you can see the moment of the drama recorded in the sharp ochre line which runs up into the sky on the far right.
We were just breathing a sigh of relief. The sketchbook was saved, as was the phone, which I had forgotten was in the submerged rucksack, and Id finished off my painting without quite freezing solid. Then I looked round. The sea had been coming in behind me. The very second I realised how close the water was, it swirled around the boulder I was sitting on and covered my boots!
The panic, the scrambling with paint, sea, sand, rucksack and sketches, trying to lift everything out of the advancing water with our hands already full of my sketchbooks, was an almost exact replica of the first time, except there were two of us yelling this time. We avoided a repeat of the sketchbook dunking, but it was a close thing.

Back on terra-firma, I had to wash sand out of my palette and paint off my face. I was crunching sand between my teeth for the next hour (from putting the brush into my mouth that Id previously poked into the sand. Duh). We retreated to the house to warm up. No lasting harm done. Phew.
